Preface: After freewriting facilitated by Dr. Young in class, each group member should have sent their Individual Literacy Definitions & New Literacy Definitions to the Group Leader for your group. Also, your group should have created a collaborative definition for New Literacies. This too should have been saved by your Group Leader.
With this information in hand, we will proceed as follows:
Directions: 1. Group Leader should review directions and make sure everyone has a role (perhaps more than one role depending on numbers). 2. Group Leader should pull up Word doc with definitions and sign into the wiki. To prevent overwriting on the wiki, the group should work from the Group Leader's laptop. 3. Archivist 1 should review the individual definitions with the group and then copy and paste them in the appropriate categories below. Make sure names are included with the definitions. Post, click save, and then edit again. 4. Archivist 2 should review the collaborative definition with the group, make any revisions, and then copy and paste it in the appropriate section below. Post and then click save. 5. Next, the Wordle-er or Word Cloud Crafter should open a new tab on the browser to create a New Literacies Wordle (http://wordle.net) or Word Cloud (using another tool, like http://www.tagxedo.com/or http://tagul.com/). by copying and pasting your group definition into the tool. Include your group # in the title to distinguish your particular New Literacies Wordle (e.g., DV-F12 Group 2 New Lit Definition) or tagxedo or tagul. 6. Once your Wordle or other type of word cloud is created, I encourage you to copy the URL and save it on your wiki page. 7. Next, copy the embed code from your Wordle page. Then click on the Widget button from the edit menu on your group's wiki page. From the menu on the left of the Widget options, choose the Other HTML option and paste in the embed code from your Wordle page into the text box. Click save and you will see a box that says Other Widget. Click save to save the wiki page, and you should see the Wordle you created! [Note: The image can also be saved as a jpg and then inserted as an image file.] 9. At this point, we will begin the next step -- planning a short digital video, so let Dr. Y know when you're ready!
OUR INDIVIDUAL INITIAL LITERACY DEFINITIONS
Literacy is not just being able to read and understand words on a page. There are multiple forms of literacy. There is media literacy, functional/work literacy, education literacy, and world literacy. A person in this day in age needs to be able to be literate in multiple forms to things from day to day. - Robin
I think literacy is simply the use of language. That can be through writing, speaking, reading, or any form of communication really. Literacy can vary depending on your geographical location, so it could take many different forms. - Brittany

My definition of literacy is being able to communicate with others in various forms. As a teacher I will need to be computer literate, know how to use Facebook, know students can minimize windows on their computer, know how to check computer history, know how to operate webcam, etc. As a teacher I should also be street/school literate. This means I should know what slang or nicknames students may be using. - Pryscilla

New literacy has a similar meaning to what I stated above. A person needs to understand technology and how it functions. This does not just include technology; it also includes media literacy and functional literacy. - Robin

Revised New Literacy Definitions Individual:
Students and individuals must not just be able to read and write but need to be able to use technology. Individuals need to know how the technology is used and the possibilities of how this technology can function in different ways in society. Students and individuals need to have media literacy so where they can evaluate what ideas are being presented to them these forms of media include music, television, pictorial and written word. TPACK states that students should understand technology in a pedagogical form, the content of technology and understand technology in itself. Individuals need to be able to understand and use these forms be a part of modern society. New literacy is made to work together with more traditional forms of literacy to create a new form of learning for students (Hicks). - Robin
After researching and reading the TPACK article, my initial definition has changed. I believe that new literacies mean the ability to have technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK Page 16). One must have knowledge of all disciplines, including technology. They should know how to use technology effectively, and be able to think beyond their traditional mindset. New Literacies requires a person to be knowledgeable of the internet, gaming software, videos, webpages, search engines, and many more. New literacies has a major impact on education and communication. It changes the way we communicate and opens up new possibilities for communication and information. -Stephanie Snead
New literacies can be used to engage students in the learning process through the use of tools like cell phones, Ipods, and online tools. However, new literacies should be used in a meaningful way -“Expert teachers consciously and unconsciously find ways to orchestrate and coordinate technology, pedagogy, and content into every act of teaching” (p 17). My use of technology will vary based on the access and restrictions students have to technology during school and at home. The use of technology requires creativity and flexibility from the teacher. Teachers should monitor the usefulness of new literacies in the classroom. Without discussion about the tools, new literacies become “divorced from the actual class routines and thus can be relatively ineffective” (p 16). -Pryscilla Lee
Literacy is word that can have many meanings and definitions, and it is ever-changing. New Literacy is taking literacy as it was in the past and revamping it. This can be through the usage of technology or through speech, audio, or literature. Using technology with literacy is one aspect that is ever changing and, in my opinion, the most effective. Media literacy is also a part of literacy that is commonly used because many individuals get a lot of their information from the media. -Brittany
